Solo ride ,left Milan at 5am & got as far half way up the Cipressa before having pull over for the Pro peleton to come through. Thought it would be really tough but it turned out to be some of the most fun i've ever had on a bike . 15 minute stop on the Turchino for a ham & cheese sandwich & a 15 minute enforced stop on the Cipressa plusa couple of other very short stops = 10 hours 53 on the bike.

In 1992 when Sean Kelly won the event (slightly different course) he rode it in 6hrs 26 min. Would have been some of the most beautiful riding for you. How did you go with the hairpin turns down the Poggio?

A lot of Italy seems to have turned into concrete in the last 20 years or more but as you say Robert , the ride takes you through /past some truly diverse & beautifull countryside & buildings & the weather was - specially for an englishman - a dream come true :-) My average speed down the Cipressa was 39kmh & 32kmh down the Poggio ... Sean could get down it twice in the time it takes me - lol. The hairpins flow nicely enough at my speed though . If your ever in the U.K around october time, there's an event in Stoke on Trent called the 'Cat & Fiddle challenge ' , Sean Kelly has ridden it for the past few years & he seems a genuinly warm & friendly sort of guy ..i'm sure he'd sign your Vitus for you if you where there ! :-)

Thankyou Rob :-) . By the time the race had gone through & i'd jumped back on the bike & ridden in to the finish the podium presentations had all been done . So i started 5 hours before Mark Cavendish & co & finished 15 minutes after them - lol. Really special to see that Cavendish had won though.. on the 100th edition of the race as well !
