hey nedlam, i tried using the iPhone a while back before i bought a Garmin Forerunner 405. There are free apps on the iPhone that use the built in GPS. I tried TrailGuru when i used it. There are some MAJOR drawbacks tho. Firstly, the GPS app always has to be in the foreground of the iPhone, which means that you can't put the phone to 'sleep' and still be using the tracking app. The best way to stop the phone from going to sleep is to listen to music. Secondly, the GPS really REALLY chugs the battery. Combine this with having to listen to music to stop the phone from sleeping and it's not good. The best i managed was 45 min ride before the battery was completely dead. I would strongly advise getting a devoted GPS tracking device. For what it's worth, the Garmin comes with it's own "Training Centre" which is pretty basic, but it does the trick.
