I was abused by a fellow cyclist while driving the car last Friday on the way to work. I was happily travelling along down Old Belair Road at about 30km/h after the Scotch College round-about when I start to hear this voice yelling 'Move' several times. After first thinking that it was maybe the radio, I look back in the rear view mirror to see this big bloke on a road bike wearing a dark t-shirt and and slip-on shoes/thongs, virtually right in my blind spot. There he was complaining and gesturing that he couldn't get past between my car and the curb. This is as we are travelling downhill around a slight left hand bend. I lowered the passenger window to give this guy a serve when he did go past but thought better of it being that I was also a cyclist. This guy was already an accident waiting to happen and I just didn't want to be the cause.
Is it just me or is that just plain stupidity? He had no lights and this was at about 7.30am before Daylight Savings had finished. If I hadn't heard him, (and I obviously hadn't seen him approach from behind) it scares me to think what might have happened if he'd tried to get past before I got close to the curb. I'm not adverse to cyclists passing traffic on the inside like this but only at the lights or where the traffic is crawling or where there is plenty of room - not at that speed on a downhill bend!!
As a cyclist, I've always been cautious in traffic because you just don't know what a car will do. While I don't think you should ride in fear (as you may as well not bother at all) surely you have to ride with a little common sense.
