Went for a ride in the hills for the first time in over 2 months! Been a bit busy since the Challenge tour... Didn't feel too bad on the climbs surprisingly... However what's with all of the propaganda crap written all over Gorge Rd?? Some stuff about being a vegan helping you if you're overweight or have cancer.... I'm not saying it's crap that being a vegan will help with cancer/weight loss, I'm not informed enough to comment on that.. However what is crap is that some people feel the need to try and brain-wash everybody else with their beliefs...

Secondly I think you misread the article, the normal approach is to click [u]up[/u] a gear or two when you get out of the saddle (apologies if you meant down as in down the cassette to a smaller cog), to a higher ratio, and this is what the article states as well.. Thirdly, I imagine the fastest way up Norton Summit would be seated all the way as you suggested.. It's not steep enough to really require getting out of the saddle I wouldn't have thought... However just because seated may be faster, doesn't mean it's as comfortable/enjoyable as getting out of the saddle occassionally.. I doubt Jack was worried too much about comfort or enjoyment when he set that time! <em>edited by JDL on 3/02/2010</em>

At the end of the day most people should be able to manage their own sunscreen needs on the Challenge tour anyway.. When you're out training do you see people waiting to give you free sunscreen? I don't remember the ride guide saying sunscreen would be provided.... Put some on before you leave and if you think you'll need some more on the way, carry it with you... <em>edited by JDL on 31/01/2010</em>

I'm also looking forward to seeing what they do next year, personally I'd love to do a stage that takes in either Old Willunga Hill or Wickhams Hill. Both are a long way from where I live so don't get out there much.. Never done Wickhams but it looks cool in the car.. I've done Old Willunga a few times and love it... It's unlikely either of these climbs will get in the Challenge Tour if they stick with the current TDU routes, both stages end in circuits and I can't imagine it will be possible to manage 8000 people of varying speeds/abilities on different laps etc, nightmare.... The Checker Hill stage would be an interesting one for a Challenge Tour too... A 200km+ ride would be cool but I don't imagine the pros want to do stages that long this time of year... I too like collecting the jerseys, even though what I really need is more knicks! Got enough jerseys... <em>edited by JDL on 26/01/2010</em>

There are two completely separate issues here, the supposed hardness of the ride, due the headwind, and the drink/food stops... In relation to the first issue, I agree with Robert and Corks, if you didn't train and prepare (and hydrate and eat correctly in the lead up) then it's no real surprise that some people found the ride beyond them.. I've done the 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010 Challenge Tours (or Breakaway/Be Active Tours as they were previously called). In my opinion, this is the easiest one they've ever put on... Climbs all out of the way in the first 50ish km and then all downhill, flat to the finish... Yes, the headwind out of Milang was tough but all part of the challenge... Just click down a few gears and keep pedalling, doesn't matter if you're going slow, as long as you're moving... Encountering a headwind at 115km or whatever isn't any harder than encountering Menglers Hill at about the same distance, which is what normally happens.. A big climb is probably a bit easier mentally, because riding into a headwind is so f^*king boring and climbing's more fun (and you expect the climb, headwinds sneak up on you!), but physically it's not much different I wouldn't have thought.. As far as the drink/food stops go, I didn't have a problem with the drink stops at all. There were plenty of them and I didn't think the wait was unreasonable at any I stopped at... The one at Milang was probably the only exception due to lack of water pressure... I think everyone agrees the food was a crap arrangement.. Should have been more stops and more food on offer, however experienced cyclists should have been carrying their own food to get by.. So all in all I don't think the ride itself or the organization was that bad, I'm sure they'll fix the food thing next year.. <em>edited by JDL on 26/01/2010</em>
